Born in Brighton to actress Caroline Gruber and director Angelo Abela, Marisa’s upbringing was surrounded by the rich tapestry of creativity and cultural diversity.

Her father, Angelo Abela, brings a blend of Maltese-Libyan and English heritage to Marisa’s background, while her mother, Caroline Gruber, adds layers of Polish Jewish and Russian Jewish ancestry. Initially contemplating a different path, Marisa had aspirations to study History and Law at University College London (UCL) and embark on a journey toward becoming a human rights lawyer. However, a last-minute change of heart led her to follow her true calling—acting. This pivotal decision set her on a trajectory that eventually led her to the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where she graduated in 2019.

Marisa Abela’s accomplishments in the world of acting include notable roles in the BBC Two and HBO series “Industry” (2020–) and the Sky One series “COBRA” (2020). Her talent and dedication to her craft have garnered recognition, earning her a spot as a 2023 Screen International Star of Tomorrow.

Looking ahead, Marisa is set to take on a compelling role as the late singer Amy Winehouse in the film “Back to Black” (2024), showcasing her versatility and ability to embody complex characters.
