Manchester City has submitted an unexpected legal action against the Premier League, claiming ‘bias’ against the club’s ownership.

According to reports, the unprecedented action has sparked a ‘civil dispute’ among Premier League clubs.

The legal action revolves around the Associated Party Transaction (APT) regulations, which City asserts are ‘unlawful.’

Implemented after Newcastle’s Saudi-backed acquisition in 2021, these regulations aim to ensure fair competition by prohibiting clubs from artificially inflating commercial agreements with firms connected to their proprietors.

These agreements must undergo independent evaluation to verify that they accurately reflect fair market value.

Meanwhile, City contends that these regulations were crafted to hinder their achievements and constitute ‘bias’ under what they characterize as a ‘tyranny of the majority.’

They aim for the elimination of the APT regulations, asserting that they unfairly single out the club’s financial operations.

According to talkSPORT, a two-week arbitration hearing is set to commence next week, with the Premier League inviting the participation of the other 19 clubs in the legal proceedings.

As of now, up to 12 clubs have consented to back the Premier League’s defense by providing witness statements or letters.

Should Manchester City prevail in the lawsuit, it could allow them and other affluent clubs to secure sponsorship agreements without independent assessments, potentially boosting their revenue and, consequently, their transfer budgets.
