She was well-known for her prosthetic right leg, which made her a unique figure in fashion modeling.

Cax was born in Brooklyn, New York City, but spent his childhood in Haiti.

She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and lung cancer when she was 14 years old, and doctors told her three weeks to survive.

Two years later, she had a hip replacement that failed, necessitating the amputation of her right leg.

She later stated that it took her several years to regain her confidence and that she hid her prosthetic leg for a long time.

She has a bachelor’s degree in international relations as well as a master’s degree.

She began playing wheelchair basketball when she was 18 years old.

Mama Cax Google Doodle

On February 8, 2023, in honor of Black History Month, Doodle celebrated Mama Cax.

Illustrated by Brooklyn-based guest artist Lyne Lucien, Mama Cax was best known for shattering expectations around beauty.

The model and advocate proudly strutted down catwalks on her prosthetic leg, often designed with colors and patterns.

She walked at New York Fashion Week in 2018, parading in a swimsuit designed by Becca McCharen (CEO and Creative Director for Chromat), who seeks to change the “standards of beauty”.

Mama Cax Death

Cax was admitted to the Royal London Hospital in December 2019 for severe abdomen pains and blood clots in the lung, which were later confirmed as a pulmonary embolism.

She died in the hospital on December 16, 2019.
