Maggy Hurchalla, an environmentalist who worked to conserve Florida’s wetlands and a strong supporter of her sister, former US Attorney General Janet Reno, died on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the age of 81.

Hurchalla’s death was confirmed by the NGO Friends of the Everglades, which described her as a “legend.”

Hurchalla was a Martin County commissioner for 20 years. She also traveled to speak about her sister Reno, who became the first female US Attorney General under President Bill Clinton.

Hurchalla backed Reno’s governorship race in Florida in 2002.
Reno was a character on an episode of “The Simpsons” in 2013, and she lent her voice to it.
Hurchalla was a member of the Governor’s Commission for a Sustainable South Florida, which helped to restore the ecosystem.
Kayaking across the Everglades near her house in Stuart, Florida was something she was known for.
