Louis Gossett Jr., the trailblazing actor who made history as the first black man to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, has passed away at the age of 87.

Gossett’s death occurred on March 29, 2024, at a rehabilitation center in Santa Monica, California. His family confirmed the news to the BBC’s US partner, CBS, although no cause of death was disclosed.
Born in New York, Gossett achieved cinematic acclaim for his portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in the 1982 film “An Officer and a Gentleman,” a role that earned him the prestigious Oscar accolade.
Prior to this milestone achievement, Gossett had already left an indelible mark on television with his Emmy-winning performance in the groundbreaking mini-series “Roots” in 1978, which explored the harrowing realities of slavery.
