Since its inception in 1981, the Lodi Parachute Center has recorded 22 deaths. According to the FAA, nine of these deaths have happened since 2016.
The family of an 18-year-old Los Banos high school graduate who died in 2016 when his parachute failed to deploy was awarded a $40 million judgment against Bill Dause, the owner of the skydiving school, on March 17.
According to investigators, Tyler Turner, a first-time skydiver, dropped 13,000 feet to the ground when his instructor, who was tied to him by a harness, was unable to open their parachutes.

The 2016 tragedy forms part of a long, troubled history of fatalities at the Lodi Parachute Center.
The woman, identified by the San Joaquin County coroner as 57-year-old Sabrina Call of Watsonville, died one Saturday afternoon, officials said. A fellow skydiver called the sheriff’s office to report that the victim’s parachute had become tangled.
The sheriff’s office said that the woman was a “very experienced” skydiver.
