Jonathan B. Sopel was born on May 22, 1959, in London, the United Kingdom to Jewish parents Myer and Miriam Sopel. He was raised in north London.

Regarding his education, Jon Sopel schooled at Christ’s College, Finchley before graduating with a degree in politics from Southampton University. He was later awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Southampton in 2011.

Jon Sopel has previously worked as a freelance writer and broadcaster. He joined the BBC in 1983 as a reporter and producer for BBC Radio Solent. He started presenting the BBC podcast Americast alongside Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis and Anthony Zurcher in 2020.

Jon Sopel was formerly the BBC’s North America editor, chief political correspondent for the domestic news channel BBC News, a presenter on the Politics Show on BBC One and the BBC News channel as well as the main presenter on Global for BBC World News.

Jon Sopel announced his departure from the BBC on 22 February 2022 following an exclusive signing with LBC towards the launching of a new podcast and joint radio show alongside presenter Emily Maitlis.

Jon Sopel is presently married to his wife Linda Twissell and together, the couple has a son named Max and a daughter called Anna. The two first while Jon was working at Radio Solent and later tied the knot in 1988. They spent their honeymoon in Masai Mara in Kenya.
