Lewis Black grew up in a middle-class Jewish family in the Burnt Mills neighborhood of Silver Spring, Maryland. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he continued his studies in playwriting and became a member of the Student Congress before graduating in 1970.

Lewis Black has been an “ambassador for voting rights” for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) since 2013. When not touring, Black resides in Manhattan but also maintains a residence in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Lewis Black hosted the Comedy Central series “Lewis Black’s Root of All Evil” and became a regular contributor to “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart, delivering his signature “Back in Black” commentary segment.
