Lewis Black is Jewish and was raised in a middle-class Jewish family in the Burnt Mills neighborhood of Silver Spring, Maryland. His grandparents emigrated from the Russian Empire, including Chornyi Ostriv and Białystok.

Lewis Black’s paternal grandfather was originally named Leib Blech, later changed to Louis Black. Lewis Black was born in Washington, D.C., United States of America.

In Washington, D.C., Lewis Black worked at the Appalachian Regional Commission and began performing stand-up comedy. Black’s career in theater took off as a playwright. He wrote the musical “The Czar of Rock and Roll” in 1990.
In 2015, Lewis Black lent his voice to the character Anger in the Pixar film “Inside Out” and will reprise the role in the sequel, “Inside Out 2”. Lewis Black is also a spokesperson for the Aruba Tourism Authority, appearing in television ads.
Lewis Black has been an “ambassador for voting rights” for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) since 2013.
