After making his Rennes debut in a 5-1 victory over Dijon FCO on Sunday night at the Roazhon Park, young Nigerian midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu gained attention.

Steven Nzonzi was substituted by Ugochukwu in the 89th minute to make his official debut after failing in his previous five efforts. He was on the opponent list for matches against Reims and Nantes, Sevilla at home and away, and Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League. At the age of 16, the young man signed a professional deal with Rennes, with Gernot Rohr keeping an eye on his development.

At age 16, he agreed to a professional contract, which the club formalized on July 1 of the following year. His agreement is up in 2023. Before making his debut against Dijon on Sunday, Ugochukwu participated in five games for the Rennes Reserve Team.

Ugochukwu graduated from Rennes’ academy and has since made 60 appearances for the team, including 35 last season across all competitions.
The 19-year-old has six caps for France’s U19 team and primarily operates as a holding midfielder. With the departures of Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and N’Golo Kante this summer, Ugochukwu’s addition would complete the revamp of Chelsea’s midfield.
