LeRoy Carhart, a prominent and controversial doctor well known for providing late-term abortions, has died at the age of 81.
His family, who announced the news via social media, said he died on Friday, April 28, but did not give a cause of death.
Carhart began focusing on abortions after retiring from the Air Force in 1985. He was one of only a handful of late-term abortion providers in the U.S. and was among the most vocal.
