Born to proud parents Norma Magistrado and Vicente de Lima, Leila’s journey is deeply rooted in her familial and educational foundations.

Vicente de Lima, her father, served as a commissioner in the Philippine Commission on Elections, contributing his expertise to the nation’s democratic processes. Leila’s upbringing in Iriga, Camarines Sur, in the vibrant region of Bicol, laid the groundwork for the values that would define her illustrious career.

Leila de Lima’s pursuit of academic excellence began early, culminating in her graduation as the class valedictorian during her basic education. She continued to shine academically, earning her AB History degree from De La Salle University in 1980.

Undeterred by the challenges, she then pursued her passion for law, graduating as the salutatorian from the San Beda College of Law in 1985. Her legal journey reached a pinnacle when she ranked 8th in the 1985 Philippine Bar Examinations with an impressive 86.26% bar rating.

Leila de Lima’s commitment to justice and human rights eventually led her to the political arena. She served as a Senator of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, advocating for reforms and tirelessly working to address societal issues.
