Legendary Luton and England Goalkeeper Ron Baynham Passes Away at Age 94

Legendary goalkeeper Ron Baynham, renowned for his remarkable tenure with Luton Town and his contributions to English football, passed away on March 18, 2024, at the age of 94.

Baynham, who made an astounding 434 appearances for the Hatters, became a household name since joining the club in 1951 until his final game in 1965.

His illustrious career spanned decades. Representing England, Baynham earned three international caps and remained England’s oldest surviving international player until his demise, as acknowledged by Luton Town.

Despite his extraordinary achievements, Baynham remained humble. Fondly remembered for his appearances at Kenilworth Road, where he received warm applause, Baynham epitomized sportsmanship and dedication.

Born in Birmingham in 1929, Baynham’s journey into football commenced when his brother assigned him to goalkeeping duties in a local team, setting the stage for his future success.

Although offered a trial with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Baynham opted for Worcester City before eventually making his mark at Luton Town.

His pivotal role in the Hatters’ promotion to Division One in 1955 marked a significant milestone in his career.

Baynham’s contributions extended beyond the pitch. Despite setbacks, including a skull fracture during a game against Sheffield United in 1960, Baynham displayed resilience and determination, continuing to inspire teammates and fans alike.

Retiring as a player in 1965, Baynham’s legacy endured. Fondly remembered for his jovial spirit, he remained an integral part of Luton Town’s history, celebrated at events commemorating the club’s achievements.

Beyond football, Baynham pursued a career as a painter and decorator, alongside his tenure at Luton Airport, before retiring to Silsoe, Bedfordshire.
