Born into a family with its own share of dramas and challenges, Lee’s background laid the foundation for a life that would intertwine with high society, politics, and the arts.

Caroline Lee Bouvier entered the world at Doctors Hospital in New York City, the daughter of stockbroker John Vernou Bouvier III and his wife, socialite Janet Norton Lee.

However, her parents’ marriage faced turbulence due to Mr. Bouvier’s womanizing and struggles with alcohol. The couple separated in 1936, briefly reconciled in 1937, but ultimately divorced in 1940.

The divorce brought about a period of limited contact between Bouvier and his daughters, including Lee Radziwiłł. He grappled with personal challenges, spending a significant amount of time drinking alone at his New York City apartment on East 74th Street.

By the mid-1950s, Bouvier’s connection with his daughters became sporadic. In 1957, Bouvier received a terminal liver cancer diagnosis, leading him to check into Lenox Hill Hospital for chemotherapy.

Falling into a coma on August 1, 1957, he passed away two days later at the age of 66. His funeral, arranged by his daughters Jacqueline and Lee, took place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, and he was laid to rest in the Bouvier family plot at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in East Hampton, New York.

Lee Radziwiłł’s mother, Janet Norton Lee, also faced challenges. Janet battled complications arising from Alzheimer’s disease and eventually succumbed to the illness in 1989.

The complexities and dynamics within Lee Radziwiłł’s family undoubtedly shaped her journey and influenced the course of her life in the public eye.
