Lawrence Cohn was a prominent figure in the medical field whose contributions as a pioneering cardiac surgeon, dedicated researcher, and esteemed medical educator left a mark in the field of cardiovascular health.

Cohn’s journey in medicine commenced at Harvard Medical School in 1971, where he steadily rose through the ranks.

His commitment to excellence and an insatiable thirst for knowledge led to his appointment as a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 1980.

His crowning achievement came in 2000 when he became the recipient of the first endowed Chair in Cardiac Surgery at Harvard Medical School, acknowledging his significant contributions to the field.

With an impressive record of over 11,000 cardiac surgical operations, Cohn specialized in heart valve repair and replacement surgery, pushing the boundaries of minimally invasive heart valve procedures.

His influence extended beyond the surgical suite, evident in his extensive body of work, which included over 440 scientific articles, 105 book chapters, and 12 books.

Cohn’s commitment to education was unwavering. At the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Children’s Hospital Medical Center Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Training Program, he played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of more than 150 residents and fellows.

On January 9, 2016, Cohn passed away, but his invaluable contributions will continue to inspire and shape the future of medicine.
