This time, his lens turned to the tri-spine horseshoe crab, an endangered species that has roamed the Earth for approximately 100 million years.
Ballesta’s portfolio of images for the competition’s Portfolio Award offers a unique perspective on these remarkable creatures.
His work documents their existence, relatively unchanged over millennia, as they navigate warm waters, engage in the rituals of life, and provide shelter for other species.
The image of the horseshoe crab, resembling an otherworldly spaceship as it glides through the dark waters, left the judging panel in awe.
Kathy Moran, the Chair of the jury and editor, marveled at the vibrancy and luminescence of this ancient and endangered species. She emphasized the importance of recognizing these creatures’ critical role in both ecosystems and human health.
Laurent Ballesta’s artistry not only captures the magnificence of the natural world but also serves as a powerful reminder of the need to protect and preserve these ancient species for future generations.
His work celebrates the extraordinary and the endangered, bringing them into the spotlight for all to admire and appreciate.
