Mullen Sr. served as an integral part of the drummer’s career while growing up.
Mullen Jr. started his career in the early 1970s when his father, Mullen Sr. pushed him to join a Dublin marching band called Artane Boys Band. However, he was not much interested in it as their focus was more on learning to read sheet music, whereas Mullen wanted to play drums more.

He left the band after three weeks after several rules concerning his appearance – mostly his hair – was imposed on him. However, he saved money and with the help of his father, he got a drum kit.
Mullen Sr. also got him into a Post Office Workers Band that played orchestral melodies with percussion. He spent two years with the band.
