Holley grew up in small-town Jameson, Missouri, and graduated with a class of only ten students. He was a three-sport athlete at William Jewell before pursuing a coaching career.

He won 918 games in that time, stopping at Central Methodist and Northwest Missouri State before a 40-year career at William Jewell. The victories rank 10th in college basketball history, just ahead of Bob Huggins, Roy Williams, and Bob Knight.
