Lalith Kotelawala: Controversial businessman & Seylan bank founder dies at 84

Businessman Lalith Kotelawala, who was from Sri Lanka and died on October 21, 2023, served as the founding chairman of Seylan Bank as well as Ceylinco Consolidated. He appeared on the Richest List of Sri Lanka in 2007. For stealing investments totaling 26 billion rupees from the defunct Golden Key Credit Company, he was placed on detention.

When Kotelawala succeeded his father as CEO of Ceylinco Consolidated in the 1960s, he expanded the company into new industries such as banking, non-banking finance, investment banking, housing and property development, travel and leisure, communication and information technology, education and healthcare, and microfinance. Three years after being hurt in a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam attack in 1996, he also started a peace effort in Sri Lanka.

Lalith Kotelawala, a well-known businessman from Sri Lanka, passed away this morning (Oct. 21) at the age of 84. Deshamanya Deshabandu Jeewaka Lalith Bhupendra Kotelawala, the founder chairman of Seylan Bank and the former chairman of Ceylinco Consolidated, was reportedly undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Colombo at the time of his passing.
