Today marked the passing of controversial businessman Lalith Kotelawala, who was charged with stealing 26 billion rupees in assets from the defunct Golden Key.

Lalith Bhupendra Kotelawala was 84 years old when he passed away. He was the founding chairman of Seylan Bank and the former chairman of Ceylinco Consolidated.

While undergoing care at a Colombo private hospital, he passed suddenly. Kotelawala expanded Ceylinco Consolidated into new industries after taking over the company from his father in the 1960s. These industries included banking, non-banking finance, investment banking, housing and property development, travel and leisure, communication and information technology, education and healthcare, and microfinance. After being hurt in an LTTE attack in 1996, he also started a peace effort in Sri Lanka three years later.

After that, on April 18, 2015, he defeated Rafal Lewon by Decision (unanimous) to win the German MMA Championship at medium weight.
