Kwesi Botchwey Obituary

Ghanaian politician and Professor Kwesi Botchwey died on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at age 80.

Botchwey had fallen ill briefly and was hospitalised at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, in Accra Ghana, where he eventually passed away.

Tributes have poured in from around the world to the family of the late academician.

Botchwey is survived by three children and the rest of his family members.

Who Was Kwesi Botchwey?

Kwesi Botchwey was a Ghanaian politician and the longest serving finance minister in Ghana.

Born on September 13, 1944, in Tamale, Ghana, Botchwey attended the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School in Ghana.

He bagged his law degree from the University of Ghana, and then proceeded to Yale Law School. After then, he obtained a doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School.

Botchwey served as lecturer at the University of Zambia, the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and the University of Ghana.

He was a Professor of Practice in Development Economics at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University.

As a government official, he served as Minister for Finance and Economic Planning from 1982 to 1995.

Botchwey also served in various capacities in terms of nation building.

He had been Advisor to the World Bank, Chairman of IMF’s Group of Independent Experts, advisor to the UNDP’s UN Special Initiative on Africa, and Advisor to the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM).
