While it won’t be a full return to official engagements just yet, the palace is signaling positive developments.
Starting next Tuesday, April, 30 2024, King Charles will embark on a symbolic visit to a cancer treatment center, marking his first public engagement since the commencement of his treatment in February.
Scheduled for the summer are plans for a state visit, during which he will host the Emperor and Empress of Japan. Additionally, the palace indicated that more external engagements will follow in the coming weeks.
The King is reportedly “greatly encouraged” by the prospect of resuming public events. However, his treatment is ongoing, and there is no specified end date.
Although the type of cancer remains undisclosed, the medical team overseeing King Charles’s treatment is pleased with the progress thus far, allowing him to gradually resume public-facing duties.
A recent photo of King Charles and Queen Camilla, taken earlier this month in the Buckingham Palace gardens, was also released alongside the update.

While decisions regarding attendance at future events like Trooping the Colour and Royal Ascot will be made closer to the time based on medical advice, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King’s summer schedule will not be as extensive as usual.
Since his diagnosis, King Charles has continued his private work as head of state, including regular meetings with the prime minister. However, next week’s visit to a cancer treatment center will mark his first official public engagement of the year.
The upcoming state visit by the Emperor and Empress of Japan will also be a significant event, albeit possibly with adaptations depending on the King’s health.
Despite recent challenges faced by the Royal Family, including the Princess of Wales’s cancer treatment and public scrutiny, Buckingham Palace hopes that this positive update will bring a sense of relief and draw a line under recent difficulties.
The King and Queen expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support and well wishes they have received throughout this challenging period.
