“We regret to inform you that Ken West, a father, husband, mentor, and most importantly, a legend, passed away quietly in his sleep on the morning of April 7th, 2022,” his family said in a statement released Thursday night.

According to ABC’s Double J, West organised the first Big Day Out in 1992 at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion

It developed into a massive music festival that takes place every year in six different places. In the previous 30 years, artists such as Kanye West, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Foo Fighters, and Limp Bizkit have headlined the festival.

Ken West also played many sets at the Big Day Out over the years, helping to start the careers of several local heroes. Silverchair, Hilltop Hoods, and Wolfmother were among them.

Before his death, West was working on a book on the legendary music festival. It was timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the show, and an extract was released in January.

Ken is survived by his wife Cathy and son Oliver.
