When Kelly Rowland was six years old, her mother abandoned her father, an abusive alcoholic who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of his service in the Vietnam War, and Rowland followed her.
Rowland’s family moved to Houston when she was seven or eight and she eventually moved in with fellow Destiny’s Child member Beyoncé, referring to Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles as “Mama T.”

“My understanding of where my father was as a kid was that he wasn’t really ready as a father,” Kelly reflected on TODAY in March 2022.
“I was angry at him. I was disappointed in him. I had all of those feelings of abandonment,” she continued, adding that she wanted nothing to do with him for a long time.
She had even asked her security teams to kick him out if he ever decided to attend one of her shows. Rowland announced her reconciliation with her estranged father, Christopher Lovett, on June 20, 2020.
Kelly revealed that Beyoncé’s husband, Jay-Z, was instrumental in her decision to reconnect with her father. Kelly Rowland’s mother passed away in 2014 from a heart attack.
