Keechant Sewell is an American police officer currently serving as the chief of detectives of the Nassau County Police Department.

Keechant Sewell was raised in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens and resided at the Queensbridge Houses there.
In December 2021, it was announced by Mayor-Elect Eric Adams that Keechant Sewell would be appointed as the 45th New York City police commissioner.
The appointment meant that Keechant Sewell became the first female commissioner of the New York Police Department in the history of New York City.

After the appointment, Keechant Sewell said;

“I’m very humbled to even be considered for this and it’s an extraordinary opportunity. And I take it very seriously, the historic nature of this.”
Keechant Sewell has served in the Nassau County police force for 23 years and will become the third Black commissioner in city history.
Keechant Sewell will replace Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, who was the third white male to run the department under outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio.
