Katherine Johnson Parents: Meet Joylette Coleman, Joshua Coleman

Katherine Johnson was an American mathematician and physicist who made significant contributions to the United States space program. She was the daughter of Joylette Coleman and Joshua Coleman.

Her mother was a teacher and her father was a lumberman, farmer, and handyman. He also worked at the Greenbrier Hotel. Johnson showed strong mathematical abilities from an early age.

Johnson was part of a group of African-American women mathematicians known as “human computers” who worked at NASA during the early years of the space program. Her remarkable mathematical skills and calculations played a crucial role in numerous space missions, including the Mercury and Apollo programs.

Notably, Johnson was involved in calculating trajectories, orbits, and reentry paths for spaceflights. Her work was instrumental in the success of the first manned space missions, including John Glenn’s historic orbit around the Earth in 1962.

Despite facing racial and gender discrimination during her career, Katherine Johnson’s expertise and perseverance broke down barriers and paved the way for other women and minority mathematicians and scientists.

Katherine Johnson received numerous accolades and honors for her contributions. In 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, for her groundbreaking work at NASA.
