Kate Winslet was the first wife of director Sam Mendes. Kate and Sam met in In 2001 when Mendes approached actress Kate Winslet about performing in a play at the Donmar Warehouse, where he was the artistic director at the time.

They married on a whim in Anguilla in May 2003, while Winslet was two months pregnant with their child. Joe Alfie Winslet Mendes, their son, was born in New York City on December 22, 2003.

Mendes and Winslet divorced in 2011 after announcing their separation in 2010.
