Karen Barber was born on June 21, 1961, in Manchester, United Kingdom. Karen Barber won the silver medal at the 1977 World Junior Championships with partner Kim Spreyer. She later teamed up with Nicky Slater with whom she won the bronze medal at the 1983 European Championships.

Karen Barber and Nicky Slater represented Great Britain at the 1980 Winter Olympics, placing 12th, and at the 1984 Winter Olympics, where they placed 6th.

From 2006, Karen Barber served as a judge on Dancing On Ice, until 2011. In 2011, Karen Barber was moved into the role of the head coach where she remained for the 2011 and 2012 series.

Karen Barber returned to the judging panel on Dancing On Ice in 2013 where she remained until the end of series 9 in 2014.
