Kang Soo-Yeon, a 55-year-old Korean actress, died on Saturday, May 7. According to reports, she was rushed to the hospital on Thursday, May 5 after suffering cardiac arrest at home. She was treated, but she never recovered consciousness and died two days later.

Kang was the festival director of the Busan International Film Festival from 2015 to 2017, according to a Facebook post. “Kang helped to introduce the world to the excellence of Korean cinema… we will never forget her hard work and dedication,” the statement said.

Kang was best known for her role in the 1986 film “The Surrogate Woman,” for which she received the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival.
From the mid-1980s to the end of the 1990s, Kang was one of South Korea’s most well-known and internationally acclaimed stars. She started her acting career as a child actor and rose to prominence with films such as Whale Hunting 2 and Mimi and Cheolsu’s Youth Sketch ). She earned the nickname ‘World Star’ after winning best actress at the 16th Moscow International Film Festival in 1990 for Come Come Come Upward (1989).
