Early on, Judy Garland (June 10, 1922–June 22, 1969), a singer and actress, found popularity and success. Through her films with co-star Mickey Rooney, she attained instant recognition among studio executives at the age of 13. Garland won a special Oscar in 1940 for her excellent work as a young actress on the big screen, which included her portrayal as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939). The renowned Ruby Slippers Judy Garland wore in the film are kept at The Smithsonian.

Not the one from the movie, her 1939 Decca recording of “Over the Rainbow” became her anthem and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard charts. The LGBT community, who not only associated with the song but also with Dorothy, was won over by the music as well.

Judy had five marriages. Her next spouse, Mark Herron, and two of those husbands, Vincente Minnelli, were both homosexual. After learning that Herron was gay and had started abusing her, Judy filed for divorce.

Liza has four marriages. Two of those husbands were homosexual, just like her mother was. Mark Herron had a passionate relationship with Liza’s first husband Peter Allen while Mark Herron was still married to Judy. Later, there were rumors that Liza’s fourth husband, the late David Gest, was gay, despite his denials. The couple’s divorce would be notoriously contentious.
