A federal appeals court in Chicago has upheld R. Kelly’s 20-year prison sentence for federal sex crimes. The 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals rejected R. Kelly’s legal team’s arguments that the charges against him were filed after the statute of limitations expired.

They sought a new sentencing hearing, claiming the 20-year sentence was too severe.

Judge Amy St. Eve, in a unanimous ruling, stated that R. Kelly had abused underage girls for years and used tactics to silence his victims. Despite his attempts to avoid consequences, the crimes caught up with him.
The judge affirmed his conviction, emphasizing that no statute of limitations protected him, and the sentence was fair given the circumstances.
R. Kelly was convicted of child pornography and child enticement in 2022, involving videos of him abusing minors. He received a 20-year sentence in February 2023, following a previous 30-year sentence for similar crimes in New York.
