McKean composed several of Slim Dusty’s most renowned songs and received the first Golden Guitar award at the Tamworth Country Music Festival for the tune “Lights on the Hill.”
McKean first met Slim Dusty in 1951, six years before he became Australia’s first worldwide No. 1 with A Bar With No Beer.
McKean was his wife and manager for over 50 years, and she was instrumental in his national success with the Slim Dusty Traveling Show.

Her musical partnership with Slim, in which she was his manager, produced over 100 albums, sold over eight million albums, and earned 45 Golden Guitars.
McKean herself won six Golden Guitars – Australia’s premier country music award – and was a celebrated fixture on the Tamworth circuit.
McKean helped create the Country Music Association of Australia and was chairwoman of the Slim Dusty Foundation which built the Slim Dusty Centre in the singer’s hometown of Kempsey.
McKean was born on 14 January 1930 and died on 25 May 2023, at the age of 93, following a long fight with cancer.
She is survived by her children Anne Kirkpatrick and David Kirkpatrick, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
