Ghanaian Afro-Gospel musician based in the UK, Joseph Matthew, has urged the organizers and board of the Ghana Music Awards to step up their efforts.

He believes that while there is potential for initiatives like the GMA-UK and GMA-USA, the Ghana Music Awards organizers need to address several issues to ensure their success.
In an interview with Onua Entertainment, Matthew expressed frustration over the fact that despite his song “Blessed” winning Best Gospel Song of the Year in the UK in 2023, he has yet to receive the plaque that serves as tangible evidence of this achievement.
He remarked that this situation undermines the credibility of the awards and makes them appear trivial.

Furthermore, although he refrained from submitting his work for the 2025 GMA Awards due to frustration, the musician stated that he intends to participate in the awards in 2025.
“I don’t like boxes…I need to be free”, Matthew encouraged fans not to categorize him solely as a Gospel Musician just because he won the Best Gospel Musician position, emphasizing that there is much more to his musical talents and aspirations.
However, he went on to explain that while his songs could be categorized as Gospel if they focus on themes like Jesus, it doesn’t necessarily mean he identifies solely as a Gospel Musician. He highlighted his versatility by stating that he could compose a song about love whenever he felt like it, emphasizing the importance of feeling comfortable with the material he sings.
