The depths of Fritzl’s resentment towards his mother reached a horrifying climax when he confessed to imprisoning her in a locked room at the top of their house, bricking up the window to ensure she never again saw the light of day. Fritzl went so far as to tell neighbors that his mother had died, concealing the grim truth of her captivity for decades.

While the full extent of Maria Fritzl’s suffering remains shrouded in mystery, Austrian newspapers have suggested that she may have spent a staggering 21 years confined to that dark and desolate room, a prisoner of her own son’s malevolence.
