Singleton was born in Harbor City on September 18, 1991, but grew up in Long Beach.
He attended Millikan High School in Long Beach, California, and committed to play baseball at California State University, Long Beach a few months before the 2009 MLB Draft.
He was selected in the eighth round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
On July 29, 2011, the Phillies sent Hunter Pence to the Houston Astros in exchange for Singleton, Jarrett Cosart, Josh Zeid, and Domingo Santana.
