John Michael Gaudreau was born on August 13, 1993, in Salem County, New Jersey, the United States to parents Guy Gaudreau and Jane Gaudreau. He was raised alongside his siblings Matthew Gaudreau, Kristen Gaudreau, and Katie Gaudreau.

Johnny Gaudreau’s younger brother Matthew is also a professional hockey player who plays on the Reading Royals of the ECHL. Johnny and his brother played together at Boston College during the 2013–14 season. Johnny played in the 2006 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He attended Gloucester Catholic High School in Gloucester City, New Jersey.

Johnny Gaudreau graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in Dubuque, Iowa. The Flames selected him in the fourth round, 104th overall, of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He was awarded the 2014 Hobey Baker Award as the best player in the NCAA.
