Johnny Ace (singer) parents: Meet John Marshall Alexander and Leslie Newsome

Johnny Ace, originally John Marshall Alexander Jr., was born in 1929 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Raised in a household of strict religious values by his parents, Leslie Newsome and Reverend John Marshall Alexander Sr., Johnny’s passion for the blues clashed with his father’s beliefs, causing family tension.

Nevertheless, Johnny honed his musical skills by singing in church and teaching himself piano and guitar.

His musical journey commenced with Adolph Duncan’s band and later led him to co-found the renowned “Beale Streeters” with local musicians.

In the company of blues legends like B.B. King and Bobby Bland, Johnny absorbed their styles and gained invaluable experience.

After B.B. King’s departure, Johnny, at just 20 years old, assumed leadership of the Beale Streeters, captivating audiences with his smooth vocals and magnetic stage presence.

Johnny’s breakthrough came in 1952 with “My Song,” a rendition of Ruth Brown’s hit, propelling him into a successful solo career. Hits like “Pledging My Love” further solidified his place in music history, even influencing icons like Elvis Presley with his vocals.

Tragically, Johnny’s life was cut short at the height of his fame. In 1954, a backstage accident claimed his life when he unintentionally shot himself with a gun he believed to be loaded.
