John Sinclair, a prominent poet, music producer, and icon of the counterculture movement, whose advocacy for marijuana legalization and his high-profile imprisonment inspired a John Lennon song, has passed away at the age of 82.

Sinclair’s publicist, Matt Lee, confirmed his death on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He had been battling congestive heart failure following an illness.

In 1969, Sinclair garnered national attention when he was sentenced to 9 1/2-to-10 years in prison by Detroit Recorder’s Court Judge Robert Colombo for providing two joints to undercover officers.

Although he served 29 months, his release was expedited shortly after a star-studded concert organized to advocate for his freedom. The concert, held at the University of Michigan’s Crisler Arena, featured performances by music legends such as John Lennon, Stevie Wonder, and Bob Seger.

Lennon’s tribute to Sinclair, aptly titled “John Sinclair,” immortalized the activist in song, highlighting the injustice of his lengthy prison sentence for a minor marijuana offense.

Following his release, Sinclair remained committed to his advocacy for marijuana legalization, playing a pivotal role in the implementation of Ann Arbor’s token $5 fine for pot possession.

He rejoiced when Michigan legalized recreational cannabis in 2018, marking a significant milestone in his lifelong campaign.

Born in Flint in 1941, Sinclair was raised in Davison and graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint in 1964 with a degree in English Literature.

Throughout his life, he immersed himself in various forms of artistic expression, including performance art, journalism, and cultural activism, all while continuing to pursue his passion for poetry.

Sinclair is survived by his two daughters from his marriage to Leni Sinclair. After their divorce in 1988, he married Patricia Brown in 1989, marking another chapter in his rich and multifaceted life.
