State Sen. John Scott, was a South Carolina lawmaker who served for more than three decades. He died Sunday, August 13 at the age of 69 after a stint in the hospital.

Scott had been at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, since Friday, August 11 when he was hospitalized for blood clot issues.
In a statement released by Senate President Thomas Alexander, Scott’s family said he “passed away peaceably while surrounded by family and close friends.”

Scott was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives for 18 years until being elected to the state Senate in 2009. The South Carolina Democratic Party praised Scott for advocating for his district, as well as issues such as education, healthcare, and economic growth, which the party stated “will have a lasting impact on our state.”
Flags will be lowered in honour of the late Senator, according to Governor Henry McMaster. To fill Scott’s seat, a special election will be held later this year.
