Born January 9, 1956 in Manhasset, Long Island, John Paul Monahan was a graduate of Washington and Lee University and Georgetown Law School.

After college, Monahan practiced trial and appellate criminal and civil law for the Washington, D.C., firm of Williams and Connolly. He also logged a stint with the New York office of Hunton and Williams.

Monahan worked as a legal analyst for NBC News, covering high-profile trials for the network’s news programs as well as for cable webs CNBC and MSNBC.

He also was a Civil War enthusiast with an extensive collection of wartime memorabilia.

John Paul Monahan met American journalist Katie Couric when she was a correspondent for Today and he was a lawyer in Washington, D.C.

The pair married on January 24, 1989 in Washington in front of their closest friends and family.

Through their marriage, they had two daughters; Ellie Monahan and Caroline Couric Monahan.

Jay Monahan died on January 24, 1998, at age 42 from colorectal cancer in Manhattan, New York, United States.
