John Nuttall: British distance runner and coach dies aged 56

The running community mourns the loss of a true British distance running icon, John Nuttall, who passed away at the age of 56 in Doha, Qatar, on November 9, 2023.

Nuttall’s sudden demise from a heart attack has left a void in the hearts of those who admired his athletic prowess and dedication to the sport.

Nuttall’s legacy in British distance running is profound. Competing in both track and cross country events, he proudly represented Great Britain at the 1996 Summer Olympics and twice at the World Championships in Athletics in 1993 and 1995.

His exceptional talent also earned him five appearances at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

Nuttall had won a silver medal at the 1994 IAAF World Cup and a bronze at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

Although Nuttall’s high-profile appearances for Great Britain culminated with the 1998 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, where he secured 75th place, his passion for running endured.

In his late thirties, he transitioned to road running, completing the 2007 London Marathon and finishing the Great North Run with impressive times.

Nuttall later became a respected coach, imparting his knowledge and love for running to the next generation of athletes.
