McVay, passed away on October 31, 2021, from an unknown cause. He was aged 91.
McVay has been described as “a major driving force, having constructed teams for five Super Bowl titles.”

John McVay was an American football coach and executive, who spent 22 seasons with the 49ers beginning from 1979, and led them to win five Super Bowl titles within 14 seasons.

Late McVay, while with the 49ers, held major positions including general manager, vice president and director of football operations.
He was a legendary icon in the history of the NFL, having worked with players like Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice and Steve Young.
Aside from the 49ers, McVay has been head coach of the New York Giants for more than two seasons.
Late McVay was inducted into the 49ers Hall of Fame in 2013.
