Former Ghana President John Dramani Mahama has contributed $10,000 to Ghana’s national amputee team.

This comes after the team’s remarkable performance at the 2024 African Amputee Football Cup of Nations (AAFCON) in Egypt last month.
The Black Challenge were crowned champions of Africa for the second consecutive time after defeating Morocco in the tournament final.
Ghana had to overcome a one-goal deficit to secure a crucial 2-1 victory over the North African nation. The outcome ensured the Black Challenge claimed consecutive Amputee AFCON titles, having previously won in 2021 as well.
Despite winning the AAFCON, the team had lamented receiving minimal support. In response, Mahama has stepped in with a $10,000 cash donation to assist them.
“I am proud to support such a talented and resilient team. Your victory is a testament to your skill and determination,” John Mahama said.

Meanwhile, the Black Challenge have secured their place in the upcoming Amputee Football World Cup in 2026.

The team’s head coach, Stephen Richard Obeng, also expressed his happiness at his team’s achievements, emphasizing that they had to accomplish this despite receiving minimal support.
“We feel very proud. The God we trusted made it happen. We’re champions in Africa for the third time in the space of two years. Despite the challenges we went through, we did it,” he said.
“It is a massive motivation to everybody that you might not have the support you need but you can go beyond the odds and make it happen,” Obeng added.
Ghana has been a dominant force in Amputee Football in Africa in recent years. In addition to their consecutive AAFCON titles, they also clinched gold in the inaugural African Para Games Amputee Football Tournament last October.

I’ve written enough about the mistreatment meted out to the Ghana Amputee Team. This is a team that needs genuine support.
Glad they got some $10k gift but aside this donation, I hope their bonuses from last year gets paid by government ASAP. Let’s do the right thing. https://t.co/YCSdUBmp87
