Who Is John Herdman?
John Herdman is the current head coach of the Canada men’s national team.
Born on July 19, 1975, in Consett, County Durham, England, Herdman had played football as an amateur for Hibiscus Coast, before he went on to manage New Zealand women’s football team, and the Canada women and men’s teams.
Herdman doubled as a student and part-time lecturer at Northumbria University, while he served as coach.

When he managed the New Zealand women’s national football team, he led the U-20 squad to the World Championship in 2006, the FIFA Women’s World Cups in 2007 and 2011 and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
In 2011, Herdman led the Canada women’s team to win a gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in Mexico, and a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
As head coach of the Canada men’s national soccer team, he helped push the team’s FIFA World Rankings from 72nd to 40th, and later 33rd.
In 2022, his team qualified for the FIFA World Cup, for the first time in 36 years.
Herdman is the first manager to lead a nation’s national men’s and women’s teams to World Cup qualification.
