John Gwynne Darts Commentator Obituary

John Gwynne was a sports commentator, reporter, and English teacher. He retired in 2013 after two decades as the voice of Sky Sports’ darts coverage. John passed away from cancer on July 9, 2022, at the age of 77.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of John’s passing,” said Sky Sports’ executive director of content, Steve Smith. He was a hugely respected broadcaster, bringing great humour and energy to our screens with one of the industry’s legendary voices.

“A consummate professional, John was a highly valued member of the Sky Sports family, and he will be sorely missed by all.”

Gwynne worked as a broadcaster, covering 20 world championships and 20 world match plays.

He was a familiar face on the network, reporting on football matches on Soccer Saturday and covering sports as diverse as cricket, rugby league, and speedway.

Gwynne worked as a schoolteacher before joining Sky Sports and reporting on darts for radio. In 2014, he was inducted into the Professional Darts Corporation Hall of Fame.

Gwynne is survived by his son, Andrew, who is the Labour MP for Denton and Reddish in Greater Manchester.
