He accepted a position at a real estate firm that conducted business with his parents’ organization, the Gap, after finishing graduate school. Due to the failure of the venture, he was appointed president of Pisces Inc., the family’s investment management firm.

He developed a partnership with Lewis Wolff to jointly buy a number of Fairmont hotels in San Francisco, which paved the way for his investment in the Major League Baseball team Oakland Athletics. Additionally, he owns shares in Celtic F.C., a team that plays in the Scottish Premiership, and the Major League Soccer teams San Jose Earthquakes.
