John Devitt, an Australian swimmer who established four personal world records and won gold medals in the 1956 and 1960 Olympics in Melbourne and Rome, has passed away.

In the 100-meter freestyle event in Rome, Devitt won his lone individual Olympic gold medal. He also competed in the 4-x-200 Australian freestyle relay team that won the gold medal at the Melbourne Games four years prior.

Along with his bronze with the Australian 4-x-200 relay team in Rome, he also won silver in the 100 freestyle at Melbourne.
The 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Wales, saw Devitt win three additional gold medals.

Later on, he worked as an executive for the Australian Olympic Committee and was instrumental in Sydney’s victory in the bid for the 2000 Summer Olympics.
