Bland, who was born on September 22, 1945, was a well-known player in his native South Africa long before moving to the United States.
He turned pro at the age of 24, but it took him eight years to win for the first time on South Africa’s Sunshine Tour.
Bland won 18 more titles on his home circuit after his first success, at the South African PGA Championship.

When he joined the DP World Tour (then known as the European Tour), he won twice, and on both occasions, he defeated future World Golf Hall of Famers.
