Joanna Simon Husband: Who was Gerald Walker?

Gerald Walker was Joanna’s husband from 1976 until he died in 2004. The couple got married on December 4, 1976.

Gerald Walker was a New York Times Magazine magazine editor best known for his 1970 novel Cruising, which was adapted into the controversial 1980 film of the same name.

Walker died of stroke complications on February 19, 2004, at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.

After the loss of her husband, Joanna Simon became the companion of Walter Cronkite, a broadcast journalist from 2005 until he died in 2009.

Joanna Simon made her debut in Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” at the New York City Opera in 1962.

Throughout her career, the mezzo-soprano appeared at the Seattle Opera, as well as with the New York Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Joanna left the world of opera to become an Emmy-winning arts correspondent for PBS’ The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, a position she held until 1992.

Joanna Simon passed away a day before her 86th birthday in Manhattan on October 19, 2022, at the age 85 from thyroid cancer, just one day before her sister Lucy died of breast cancer
