James Tomsula is an American football coach who now serves as the head coach of the Rhein Fire in the European League of Football (ELF). He was born on April 14, 1967. Tomsula has worked as a defensive coach his whole professional life. He has also served as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL) and the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe.

Tomsula was raised in the Homestead neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He transferred from Middle Tennessee State University following the 1986 season and played defensive end for Catawba College from 1987 to 1990. In two seasons at Catawba College, Tomsula made 109 tackles.

Tomsula joined the Dallas Cowboys on January 8, 2020, as the defensive line coach. Tomsula and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan were fired on January 8, 2021.
